Only a true friend can protect you from immortal enemies..
Lissa Dragomir is a mortal vampire. She must be protected at all times from the fiercest and most dangerous vampires of all - the ones who will never die. Rose Hathaway is Lissa's best friend - and her body guard.
Now, after two years of illicit freedom, they've been dragged back inside the iron gates of St. Vladimir's Academy. The girls must survive a world of forbidden romances, a ruthless social scene and terrifying night-time rituals. But above all, they must never let their guard down, lest the immortal vampires take Lissa - forever...
I actually watched The Vampire Academy film before I read the book (I know it was a bit bad, but I accidentally came across it) and got hooked. I love how Michelle Mead has taken us into a whole new world and made it different from the other Vampire books. She obviously spent a lot time and effort into creating this new world of; Mori, Strigoi and Dhampir’s because it felt so real and believable.
After watching the film I researched into the books and found it was a part of a series containing 6 books, I got so excited. The reviews stated that it will start of slow but would compel you (no pun intended there) and you wouldn't be able to put it down. I did find the first book very hard to get into but by the end, my views had completely changed.
The book is based from Rose’s perspective and she is so likeable. Rose is a sassy, kickass goddess but yet is so vulnerable and would do anything to protect Lissa. This is what I loved so much about her, how dedicated and focused she was in her duty.
Lissa, well she couldn't be more opposite to Rose if she tried. I liked Lissa from the beginning, she is a sweet, honest, vulnerable young girl however she does have a dark side which, is why I was always felt wary of her but in the end it all became very clear as to why.
Finally Dimitri, a warrior, a god, the number ONE guardian, no one could ask for anyone better to protect them. Ladies pre-warn, you may become obsessed with his Russian accent and sexy exterior, he is a dreamer. But, there is a lot more to Dimitri than this, he acts like nothing in the world can harm him but he never saw his “Roza” coming. He may be a badass Dhampir but whenever Rose is involved all he wants is to protect her at all cost.
A lot of my favourite scenes in this book were based on Dimitri and Rose and I am very much looking forward to, seeing how their characters grow further in the other books.
In conclusion, anyone who loves vampire themed books, films or TV series’ such; Vampire Diaries or Twilight will fall in love with these books, to be honest I have watched all sorts of vampire entertainment but this is my favourite by far. It was thrilling, shocking and a great beginning to this series. I could sense, even though it was based in a school, there is a lot more darkness to come.
